Synthesize by Anthony Neil Dart

Work from Anthony Neil Dart has been my latest graphic inspiration. It's a beautiful collage of information and text and imagery. Reminding me of Corner & MacClean beautiful landscape images, Dart's work uses images of beauty and limited color, but still very bold and capturing. Think Design Blog did a great interview with Dart, which worth filing away for a read of inspiration. {via}
While researching websites this week, I came across some beautiful examples, including this awesome full screen video website, Uniqlock. It might not seem like much, but the full screen/scaling site option is pretty new (to me) works beautifully in multiple sizes. And the super text graphics for the loading screen doesn't hurt either.
Hot wheels on steroids - I was (and still am) a huge lover of slot cars and tracks. Having grown up with no brothers, my father treated me like the son he didn't have, so I had a few of these racing kits growing up (and still do!). But these tracks will blow any enthusiast away! {via}
JCPenny's new logo screams America, but to me its more reminiscent of London's Mind the Gap campaign. I definitely see the market they were going after, but I'd have to say my verdicts still out on the revamp. What's your thoughts? {via}

Artist, Chad Wys new series, Nocturne and Process of Elimination series is total eye candy. Taking works of master paintings and leaving out gaping 'pieces of information' is great to see what conclusions ~~or assumptions~~ the mind recognizes and fills in. This is a beautiful way to revisit the classics.

My nerdiness is about to run amuck! NextArchitects have gone and developed and produced an ARCHITECTURE game! Ahhh! my inner architect (which seldomly gets to come out) is so excited!
All my knowledge from school can finally be put to the test... although, I still appreciate being texted for precedent questions. The game features iconic buildings and a set of infamous LeCorbusier for the player who is taking his turn. Originally launched in 1999 but only available to that damn awesome dutch Delft University, this is the second edition is the international version, meaning that it is produced in English, but also that the questions range right across the breadth of modern world history.

I can't wait 'til this is available for online purchase ...if you find it let me know. But when it is, expect a call from me for an uber nerdy board game night. {via}

Talk about a Beauty! The Internet Archive is hosting a copy of the American Specimen Book of Type Styles put out by the American Type Founders Company in 1912. It's a 1300-page book listing hundreds of typefaces and their possible use cases. It's Nouveau-esque page borders are enough to swoon over, but the types, oh the beautiful types! {via}

Lana del Rey's SNL performace last week has been all the talk on the interwebz. Even Brian Williams had some choice words about her performance. Now I've been a fan of LDR since 2Pz posted Video Games, and have been starring anything new on the hypemachine. So needless to say I was psyched about her performing on SNL, but half way through the song, the boy and I had to change the channel. Not only was Daniel Radcliff less than stella but LDR was a let down.

But I digress... I keep tryin to place her 'look' and Saturday I figured it out! She's totally Ginny Baker (Andy's sister) from Sixteen Candles! Especially in that wedding dress! done and done. I knew I would get it!

This has been a crazy few weeks, and like always I'm behind on what I'm doing. But I'm in need of sharing my awesome finds of late.

Swissted is an ongoing project by graphic designer mike joyce, owner of stereotype design in new york city. Drawing from his love of punk rock and swiss modernism, two movements that have absolutely nothing to do with one another, mike has redesigned vintage punk, hardcore, and indie rock show flyers into international typographic style posters. And these are definitely worth the bookmark. These are real shows, and totally reminds me of some of my fave Frank Stella work, and probably needs me to print a few.
I knew I wasn't the only one who was noticing handwritten letters, typically from editors, finding it's way all over the publishing world! and even on some of my fave blogs, A Beautiful Mess uses it all the time! Luckily Noteworthy put together a great list of brushes (free!) to download and try, I can't wait to get home and really try these out on my tablet! {via}

Fourth Year Studio - a great letterpress company, and former architecture students with me, out of Knoxville is having a fund raiser for Baby Tyson (who is a heart baby of another fellow archy over at Vandy). You can check his inspiring story here. And as a new mother, I have no idea how I would be able to be half as strong as Tyson's mom, but they are so wonderful, and it's great to see how wonderful he has been doing, I'm somewhat addicting to checking his status, and hoping (since I'm not the praying type) he's continuing to do well {to purchase a calendar}.

How did I miss this? Well I guess if I'm honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Community for a while, I think it was season one's Halloween episode that first won me over. But apparently for the past three seasons, the word “beetlejuice” has found its way into the script of Community , and we all know what happens when you say Beetlejuice 3 times. Be sure to pay attention at the third scene's background... clever! Hopefully this doesn't get cut, I'd hate for this show, now that it's won a place in my heart, to get the axe. Enjoy!

On October 26th, a hole was blasted in the base of 125' tall Condit Dam on the White Salmon River in Washington. In less than 2 hours, the reservoir behind the dam drained completely and the White Salmon flowed unimpeded by a dam for the first time in 100 years. Wine Review: Martini & Rossi Asti Spumante
Price: $12.99

Pros: I have recently been on a champagne kick... I know, I'm always a party! And this bubbly (technically it's a sparkling wine) champagne is a little sweet, but it's crisp and light and tastes good when you add a fruity liqueur, or in this case cranberry juice. I think I read somewhere that it has hints of delicate flavors of melon, peach, apple and grapefruit.

Cons: I could drink this all day.. is that a con? ha! no, but seriously. I suppose it could have been cheaper? or maybe a little teeny tiny bit not as sweet. but over all this was a win for team help margauxxx drink!

Overall: 95% - Maybe I'm being too easy, but I FLIPPIN' LOVE this wine / champagne. I think I found the drink that will one day accompany my xanex's... HA! (jk)

Wine Review I: Duplin Hatteras Red
Price: $9.99
Pros: We wanted a local or organic red... and this is local-ish (North Carolina), but unfortunately not organic. It's sweet, great chilled (which I'm totally into a chilled red lately), had a cute cork graphic, a nice floral and berry like aroma. It's made with muscadine grapes, something John (the Looney Boyfriend) had not heard of, but wanted to try once I convinced him how tastey they are. And it was Light, something I found really nice for a sweet wine, because in my previous experiences some sweet wines are really syrup-y. I believe that has a fancy wine name, but for now we're goin with syrup-y.
Cons: It could be on the air of too sweet. We had a nice bbq chicken pizza with it, and I almost had to wait to drink this after my meal was finished. Like I said in the Pro's it wasn't heavy or anything, just very flavorful to mix with a meal. Seems more appropriate with a dessert or post dinner.
Overall: 89% - Remember I'm still refining the ranking / rating system, but this was a delightfully light (and sweet) wine. A definate get again!

Yes, I suppose it's true, my baby's daddy believes the earth is flat. I know it sounds crazy, but isn't everyone entitled to their few crazy ideologies?... let's say it keeps things interesting. When we first started dating, I did what any normal girl would do and googled, john davis, and to my amazement I found a BBC article about a 'flat earther' scientist from Chattanooga (originally Canada) who does in fact believe this idea of a 'round earth' is just a conspiracy by the government.

Now, I know that confirmed his crazy, but really what kept me around was this quote, "I came to realize how much we take at face value," davis says. "We humans seem to be pleased with just accepting what we are told, no matter how much it goes against our senses." This stuck with me, I think because it's something that is beat into us in academia (my first love). Too often, we just agree with what we are told and move on, but is it not how we progress or learn to be constantly questioning? But that's for a whole 'nother day. So I've always liked to drink, but usually it's not mattered what. If there is alcohol in it, I'll take it, but since becoming a mom, and going out and drinking isn't as easy as before, I've started to really be more interested in what I am drinking, and the quality of it, and taste. So I've decided to embrace this whole 'mom' thing and keep a record (via the blog) of all my 'tastings'. Now I'm not by any means a wine taster or do I claim to have a good pallette for this sort of thing, but I'm hoping with these postings, I'll develop more and become more knowledgable on these matters. So here goes! Also please feel free to comment, or recommend anything too!

Wine Review I: Rex Goliath Merlot
Price: $6.99
Pros: it was dry, and cheap... which might of been a selling point, but I would not recommend it or get it again. It did have a decent label... I mean, come on, a proud cock, I guess it was totally an impulse buy.
Cons: strong alcohol taste and smell.... was recommend for best buys under 10 at my local liquor store, but I think I prefer the penguin wine (typically my wine of cheap choice)
Overall: 58% - I haven't fully worked out the ranking / rating system, but this would not be a get-again wine.

Sometimes the process is more interesting than the finished product, and the Running Typography project definitely does that. Created (or maybe I should say started and tracked) by designer and runner Joan Pons Moll, Running Typography takes current GPS technology to track his running of type to create a font set. I suppose the letters aren't the cleanest, but the process of using the already in place city (street) grid to create a font set is pretty neat! and to add to the neatness you can be a guest runner.

The Pilot Light is the best venue in town bringing in the best new bands, and the few weeks are no exception. Two of my newest infatuations (both from Nashville) will be rockin' the Old City.

Turbo Fruits - I don't know as much about this band, and have tried out a few of their other songs, but I keep coming back to this one, Mama's Mad Cos I Fried My Brain. Enjoy!

Heavy Cream - Gettin a lil' hype after playing SXSW this year, Heavy Cream of the Label Infinity Cat (who is home to a few Nashville greats) I suspect will not disappoint. Their energy is that of the Runaways + the Ramones + Best Coast. Plus they got that all 3 out of 4 members are ladies (always a positive in my book). Enjoy the Watusi!

The last time a Knoxville band played late-night network TV, in 1997, it was after midnight (on Conan O’Brien’s Late Night) and that was the V-Roys backing Steve Earle—so this is a big deal.

Requiem for a Dream

Moviebarcode is way cooler than it sounds. Apparently this site takes movies and reduces each frame of the film to a stretched out still and smashes 'em all up together (in super crude terms)... this might explain it better.

Each ‘barcode’ on the site features every frame of a given film vertically stretched and then assembled into something that looks like a barcode. The result is like a graph that charts the use of color in any given movie. Note: there is no actual data encoded within these graphics. Yes, I tried a barcode scanner on a few. I’d love to see someone figure out how to add more specific info, but as is this is a weird, oblique way to look at part of a film’s visual style in one broad overview. It is like being able to go down to a paint store and grab a card of paint chips representing some of your favorite movies. {via}

Whatever is going down, it's beautiful, and I love the idea of potentially embedding more information into those images. Right now I'm happy to just enjoy the palette of these films as a one image 'barcode'.

So I've been dying to get back into painting, and what a better kickstart than a charity event... I mean, we all love to do good, right? So I volunteered to paint a rain barrel for the Water Quality Forum via the Stormwater Matters group to benefit the town of Farragut (here's their handy Facebook page too!). I've seen the previous years' barrel, and some are way cool, and figured this was a good gig to get into.

I've been sketching up some new directions to go in for my art, and I've really been fixated on my heritage... while, not Mexican (I'm Guatemalan + Spanish) I have found myself fixated on all things Dia de los Muertos related. These images done by Sylvia Ji (a Sexy Spanish modern day pinup painting meets Gustav Klimt) or even the fun t-shirt graphics by Mondo Guerra ... you know he was your fave last season on Project Runway... are the ones I keep finding myself coming back to. I've always been more of an illustrator, and I think it's time to take my findings on myself + culture (via my thesis in architecture) and love of graphics to the next media! so enjoy this Rain Barrel postings in the weeks to come! So far, I only have the base paint done, but weather permitting I want to make major headway tonight. And please any comments are always welx!

I guess she just couldn't stay away. A few months ago, I posted about a contest Matel hosted where fans could vote on Barbie's next career, and at the time Computer Engineer won out over Architect... but I guess she wasn't feelin' the whole computer crowd. While normally I find it awesome to have little girls aspire to be / do something other than being a model (or skank) or living off her rich husband, I don't think Barbie made the right career move by pursuing architecture. This is one of the worst times to enter this job market... while things are pointing to an economic upturn, still more of my friends (with architecture degrees) are unemployed than not, and have even gone back to school to avoid this dire time. Plus what's up with all the color? I don't think Barbie, contrary to what the article says about working with architects, has ever visited a firm. It's pretty rare to find an architect with so much color in her wardrobe... but at least they got the thick rimmed glasses right. {via}

So the great Nubbytwiglet (whom I swoon over her and her style and her work) has been doing some great graphics for Solestruck, an amazing shoe site. So I then liked 'em on facebook, and through a lil' convo got turned on to these INCREDIBLE shoes, Heavy Machine. The color blocking and new lines are a fresh take to the every of what I see in shoes. Oh! and I almost forgot! the designers of these shoes have the best story! Two Taiwanese ladies wanted to fulfill the dream of a generation of trendsetting women who demand a deeper sense of empowerment, with footwear designed to be sexy and edgy. Their distinctive looks for the modern woman allow her to make a statement with each step that she takes. Oasis... When I first discovered these giants of Brit Rock I was a young gal of about 14. It was life changing... this was the band that opened up a world of music to me. I was no longer the kid that listened to the stuff her parents did (not that there was anything wrong with their taste, my parents were recording artists and helped me develop a decent ear and music taste) but I know had my own band, a band of fuck-you rock'n'rollers, and not too shabby looking to boot. As I grew older and my tastes matured and developed, and as Oasis faded and continued their Brit pop style, we grew apart. It's not that they didn't keep making great music, it just didn't evolve with me. But I still love the nostalgia feeling I get when I listen to a 'classic' Oasis song, and when a new single or song is rumored I still get that anxious excitement I did when I was 16.

So this post is a lil' nod to a great, Oasis, and most recently Beady Eye (Liam's solo song writing attempts sans Noel). I was unfortunately not impressed by the first single, Bring the Light, but with a new cd release quickly approaching, I found the next two songs much more enjoyable.

Their most recent single Four Letter Word, is sort of what I'd expect for a new oasis single. Strong beat, whirling guitars, and slightly more refined vocals from Liam. At times I find it trying to hard, but overall enjoyable.

Today's release, The Roller, is drenched with heavy John Lennon-esque hand... not that I'm complaining. This so far is my favorite of the Beady Eye songs. A sweet and catchy chorus, "They call me the roller, I squeeze and unfold ya..." lingers with me. The guitar solo isn't trying so hard like in Four Letter Word, and the piano re-emphasizing the bass is a nice addition. This single is starting to reignite my 'Oasis' love. I hope you guys enjoy as well!

Saks in the City - Fashion blogs are a dime a dozen, but with Saks I found a real girl trying to make it in the really big city (Paris), and she is doing it all while looking great and sharing her secrets. I know, as I have never been petite in size, fashion and even just drooling over fashion is hard. There is never anything that fits just right, and while there have been great advances in the ...dare I say it... Plus Size World, It's still hard to find someone to really identify with, but Saks is great! wearing things I would wear, and not at all feel weird about wearing them.
Isle of Tune - a great little time waster. This site lets you make roads and houses and plant trees and lights in a city of your dreams, but to car driving music. wait.... does that make sense? It's like Sim city, but as you let your cars drive around it plays music based off where you placed your houses and stuff... It's really cute and fun! and I'm just loving the MJ Beat It city!
Google Body - Now you can be an anatomy perv! Google just recently launched Google Body! an 'Google Earth' for the body. I know I'm not the only one who zoomed in on the genital, right?

Oh Land - a Copenhagen lady making beautiful electronic experimental music. Is it just me, or what is up with these fabulous foreign ladies rocking out? Think Robyn, Little Boots, and Lykke Li (maybe similar... the accent, the drum playing and even the cape)? Well, Oh Land isn't any different.. not that it's a bad thing, but I'm loving her live version of Son of a Gun, and the balloons and motion lighting is pretty rad too!

Broken Bells - James Mercers (of the Shins) and DJ Danger Mouse are pretty fabulous combination! In perfect Shins-esque fashion, the tune, October is haunting.

So I just realized, even though work hasn't been bad, I've completely neglected you. My last post was on my birthday, and it's almost been a whole damn month of my silence, and for that I apologize. I'll update you on my skinny...

I've seen a few movies, some worth high praise and other not so much.
Easy A - I heard good things, and I even heard these things from people I trusted with good taste. But alas, it was a total disappointment. I don't think awesome amounts of drinking or drugs could have made this bearable. I mean, it had it's moments, but I think first off it could have been half the length! I sort of got the idea of what it would be about from the previews, Dawson's Creek talking highschooler (Emma Stone) starts spreading rumors she's a skank, and it get way way way out of hand... I mean, not a bad premise, but that's about it. Overall... I'd say a .....55%

Black Swan - On the other hand, this proved almost as good as the rumors I had heard. I would say there was way more touching screens then I thought, but it added a nice uncomfortable-ness to film. Beth (played by Winona Ryder) ... whom I had no idea was even in the film ... was a fantastic character. Somehow, with all my hectic-ness and crazy life it's nice to see someone else on the edge of a break down. What I really enjoyed were the small, maybe just 1 second worth of crazy, Natalie Portman's Character, Nina, would see... I really had to question my eyes, and it helped me relate to her more. While I would say I did enjoy Requiem for a Dream more, Arnoffsky did a brilliant job at leaving me gasping and wanting more......91%

I also recently got my hair did. I've been super broke... I know, we all are this time of year, and signed up to be on the mailing list for SuperCuts Training Class. Normally I don't think I'd even consider getting a hair cut there... not that I'm snobby, but I am really partial to Lox, but I guess because these new trainees are more scrutinized during the training class than once they get their day to day job, my girl, Kaytee (or whatever her name was) did a FABULOUS job! think Posh Spice but slightly longer and with a heavy bang. It's cute and I'll try to get a picture up after I shower today... It's a little dis-shelved right now.

I think that's about it, I've been to Chattanooga, and I think I'm heading back this weekend... for the holidays, but there isn't too much going on there.... I've been making websites, but mostly for friends for gifts, so posts once they are up and running! Oh and all my new graphic making has been on my new computer! it was a birthday gift, and it still rocking my world. And speaking of birthdays, I did have a lil' shindig, which of course things got too rowdy to remember to take pictures! But really I've just been spending too much time with King Bean and his clan (yes, my lil sensitive male kitty is now being referred to as King Bean, but it's only fitting... he does rule the roost).

The Like, a band I fancied about 4-5years ago with their pseudo-grunge mumbled vocals. Sweet yet reminiscent of Nirvana or recent rockers, War Paint (see music tab). But this new sound, and new lineup, was produced by Mark Ronson (a fave of mine) and Alex Greenwald (Radiohead and composed the score to There will be Blood). The now Quartet plays fun head bobbing songs like those of lady groups from the 60's. and the videos aren't so bad either.... enjoy a fave of mine below!

It seems like everyday since graduation is a rollercoaster of emotions. Is this really what I worked so hard on? I spent 6 years in school (ridiculous amounts in debt) for this? A barely making ends meet life of unemployement... well... I did start M+J Design Bureau, but even that, as wonderful as it is, is hard. Soooo much harder than working for someone, even if that someone is a total douche who under appreciates your talent and makes you create birthday cards for his slutty daughters, only to then give you a 25% pay cut, that really won't pay your rent.... alright... enough of these rambles... but if you are a 20-something, a highly encourage this read, I've included a snippet. This guy in New York claimed to have a real Michealangelo behind his couch, yeah... I'm totally not making this up. So he finally called the right guy to identify it, and viola! he is now the owner of a 300million dollar painting, what some are calling the find of the century. Martin Kober, the owner of this 'find', had the painting behind his couch for 27 years after his children threw a tennisball at it. {via}
